Introduction

Do you know how butterflies grow and change?  Do you know the body parts that make up the butterfly and what they do?

In this WebQuest you and your partner will learn about the life cycle of butterflies.  You will use the Internet to discover amazing information about the four life cycle stages of a butterfly:

·        egg or larvae

·        caterpillar

·        chrysalis or pupa

·        adult or butterfly

You will also use the Internet to label the body parts of a butterfly.

The Task

After observing a real butterfly and models of the butterfly life cycle, we will start a KWL chart on what you already know about butterflies, and listen to stories about butterflies.  You and your partner will learn more about butterflies by visiting web sites.  You will learn about the life cycle stages and the body parts that make up a butterfly.

Your job will be to label the four life cycle stages of a butterfly, label the body parts of a butterfly, and write about what you have learned.

The Process

1.     Together we will fill out what you want to know about butterflies on the KWL chart.  We will also read aloud stories about butterflies before starting the WebQuest.

2.     You will be assigned a partner to work with at your computer.  It is important that you work cooperatively together and share your ideas.

3.     You and your partner will look at different websites to see pictures of the life cycle of the butterfly and its body parts.

4.     You and your partner will put pictures of the life cycle stages of a butterfly in the correct order and label the stages on a worksheet.

5.     You and your partner will label the body parts of a butterfly on a worksheet.

6.     Discuss with your partner what you have learned about the butterfly.  Write in complete sentences about the 4 life cycle stages of a butterfly.  Write about the body parts that make up a butterfly.
